New Refractory Concepts in Glass Manufacture

Chris Windle, DSF

Refractories are the building blocks of the glass industry; the evolution of glass manufacture is interwoven with the innovation of refractory compositions. The paper illustrates two different strands of refractory development; products which are just finding a foothold in applications; spinel and calcium aluminate chemistries and products which although “established” are none the less evolving into more resilient forms as the glass manufacturing environment becomes more arduous.
Spinels with alkali resistance; mullite with excellent creep resistance and a dense AZS product with phenomenal thermal shock resistance are all described.
